Vision/Mission
Epic Church began with a question: "What would a church community look like if it had as it's focus engaging God’s story to change the world?" Our first Gathering was in October of 2007, originally meeting on Sunday evenings, then moving to Sunday mornings at a new location in April of 2009. Our times and locations have changed, but our vision and focus have remained the same.
Epic is committed to be a place where everyone is welcome, questions are encouraged, and where following Jesus is good for everyone. Imagining the best possible way to live, we see as our core values the following:
- Embrace the salvation Jesus offers as the only hope for right relationship with God, each other, ourselves and all creation.
- Encourage everyone to find their place in God's story. The message of Jesus is for all people- regardless of their race, political affiliation, religious background, economic or social viewpoint. Whether you consider yourself conservative, liberal, part of the evangelical church or emergent church, or have never been in a religious community at all, we believe Jesus is good for everyone.
- Pursue community in every aspect of our lives, developing relationships that involve one another and the world around us.
- Maintain a goal to give away the majority of funds donated to Epic. We believe that the church is one of the few institutions that exists primarily for the benefit of it's non-members and should have a reputation as a compelling force for good in our world. As God blesses us, our goal is to give away the majority of our funds to bless others.
- Dedicate our time and resources to join the God of the oppressed in relieving suffering and injustice in our own communities and our world. We were created to live a story that is larger than ourselves.
Theology
Throughout history, many great stories have been written, but there is one story that is not just calling to be read and studied, it is waiting to be lived. We are all a part of the greatest story ever written - God's story. We believe God's scripture is true for everyone, in every generation. At Epic, our goal is to discover our place in God's story and live out our role the best we can, relying on the leading of the Holy Spirit in our lives and in our community. We believe that as Christians, we are to do everything we can to live as authentic followers of Jesus in this ongoing epic.
We believe in the orthodox Christian faith as described both in the Nicene Creed and the Apostles Creed. We seek to explore scripture, realizing it is a diverse narrative authored over hundreds of years, by varied writers, inspired by God, each telling part of a unified story. It is God's story. While systems of study are very useful and helpful in understanding scripture, the main themes of this narrative can be missed when relying on these systems alone. Christianity is first and foremost a story. It is a history. It is more than a series of timeless truths that we tap into from week to week. It's a dynamic, unfinished narrative we live in and all have a part in working towards its conclusion.
The Bible does indeed make propositional truth claims, however, the primary purpose of scripture is to record the relationship between God and His people. As a way to understand and engage the story of the Bible, we focus on a narrative reading of scripture in a way that brings the story in context to the original setting and looks for how we live it out today.
This narrative is clearly seen throughout the Bible starting at Creation, followed by the The Fall (sin entering the world), The Exodus (God's rescue), the narrative of God's People, and the coming of Jesus, the promised Messiah who would lead a New Exodus, delivering people from sin and injustice. We are living in the last chapter of this story, as followers of Jesus (the Church) called to live in such a way that brings God's will to earth as it is in heaven.
We believe that Jesus will return to earth to judge the world and bring an end to suffering and injustice. He will restore all things to the way God intended for them to be from the beginning of time.
